Instant Boiling Water Taps – Are they a Good Buy?

Boiling water taps are a really popular choice with new kitchen installations. In fact, many people are now choosing to install them in existing kitchens too.
Our guide will cover everything you need to know before making a decision to purchase the perfect boiling water tap for your kitchen.

What is a Boiling Water Tap?

Boiling water taps are similar to ordinary taps but have the huge advantage of instant boiling water, literally on tap! You can retire your kettle and have piping hot water for saucepans whenever you need it.

How do Boiling Water Taps Work?

Boiling water taps are connected to a tank which resides under the sink. The tank is attached to the mains as well as your water supply. The water is heated and stored at the correct temperature by the tank. Jurn on the tap and voila, instant boiling water!

Boiling Water Tap Installation

It is always advisable to have your boiling water tap installed by a plumber. It’s a more complex job than a standard tap fitting as there are more connections. You will need to have enough space under your sink to fit the tank and a standard plug socket nearby.

What is the Actual Water Temperature of a Boiling Water Tap?

Most boiling water taps store the water at around 98°C which is just under boiling temperature. This is absolutely fine for normal domestic use, including making tea and coffee. If you look at the instruction labels on tea and coffee (who does that?) you’ll notice that they usually recommend making your beverage with water just slightly off the boil.

The 3 Types Of Boiling Water Tap

1. Standard boiling water only tap
2. 3 in 1 taps
3. 4 in 1 taps

Boiling Water Only Tap

Many people use these as a secondary tap. They can be placed adjacent to your ordinary taps or wherever is most convenient, say on the kitchen island.

3 in 1 Tap

These are really convenient as they dispense regular hot water, cold water and boiling water in one tap which can replace your standard taps.

4 in 1 Tap

The ultimate in taps, really! 4 in 1 taps will dispense hot, cold or boiling water and include a filtered drinking water option.

What is the Risk of Burns from Boiling Water Tap?

Boiling water taps have been carefully designed to minimise any risk of burns or scalding. Most systems have safety sprung handles which have to be activated in a certain manner to access the boiling water. Unlike a standard tap, you have to push a safety button down and hold it there until you have sufficient water. When you let go, the tap goes off. Not only that, you’re much less likely to get splashed by a boiling water tap because the water comes out at lower pressure than standard taps.

Boiling Water Taps are Better for the Planet

Let’s face it, most of us overfill our kettles. This adds up to a lot of wasted CO2, and is bad news for the atmosphere. A boiling water tap will really reduce your energy usage as you’ll definitely use less boiling water.

Boiling Water Tap Filters

Most boiling water taps include a filter to reduce limescale, which is great if you live in a hard water area. These filters need to be changed regularly, usually 6 monthly, but check the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Boiling Water Tap Finishes & Designs

There are a wealth of design options available:
●  Contemporary or traditional
●  Chrome
●  Stainless steel
●  Anthracite
●  Brushed copper

How Much Does a Boiling Water Tap Cost?

This  Checkatrade article discusses the outlay and the running costs of a boiling water tap:

“ Boiling water taps typically cost significantly more to buy than ordinary taps for your kitchen sink. The price depends on the specification, design and brand, plus any extra features such as filters. You can also buy combination taps that combine boiling, hot and cold water all in one unit. The average cost of a boiling water tap ranges from around £579 – £1,000, although you can find more expensive high-end models on the market. “  – Checkatrade

As you can see, there is a considerable outlay involved, even at the cheaper end. But, over time you can expect to make energy savings as you will no longer be using your kettle or hob to heat water. In addition, you will only use the amount of boiling water you need. Most of us overfill kettles!

WaterGuys’ charges for boiling water tap installation usually range from £150 – £200, but costs can vary depending on whether an electrician is needed.
