Powerflushing by WaterGuys
How could Power Flushing benefit your central heating system?
A warm and comfortable home is highly dependent on a fully functioning central heating system. Regular care and maintenance of your central heating is imperative and will always prove to be money well spent.
Heating Services in Central London
Of course, regular boiler servicing is always recommended, but certain central heating problems demand a different solution. So, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, a Power Flush may fix the problem.
- Strange noises from the boiler
- Boiler cutting out
- Taking longer to warm up
- Radiators are cold at the bottom or top
- Cold spots in radiators
- Blocked pipes or valves
The root cause of these problems is a build up of sludge in your central heating system.
This sludge can cause blockage and corrosion which will lead to a less efficient system and higher energy bills.

What is radiator sludge?
Radiator sludge is caused by the build up of a mixture of bits of rust (iron oxide) and dirt particles within the radiators and pipework. Over time, rust breaks aways from the inside of radiators, pipes and soldered joints. Unfortunately, this gunk will accumulate and settle as a claggy liquid which will eventually clog up the heating system.
At best, sludge buildup will lead to radiators that don’t warm up property. At worst, this magnetite sludge can cause costly damage to important boiler components such as the heat exchanger, which may cease, block or fail. Malfunctions involving zone valves, pumps, and diverter valves can also prove expensive to repair or replace.
What is Power Flushing?
To protect the central heating system and boiler from further magnetite sludge, we recommend a filter for future protection. The filters can be cleaned annually to remove any excess build up of sludge.
Power Flushing is an affordable, efficient solution for many of the different problems associated with sludge buildup, from clogged radiators to noisy boilers and pipes.
Using a Power Flush pump alongside a magnetite machine, WaterGuys will chemically Power Flush your system to remove as much sludge as possible. This will make your heating system more energy efficient whilst providing optimum heat output from your radiators.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your boiler is regularly (we recommend annually) serviced, Powerflushing should only be necessary every 5-6 years. This can, however, depend on the system you have. Boilers using copper heat exchangers do tend to corrode more quickly than stainless steel ones.
If you’re unsure which type of heat exchanger you have, please give us a call. We’re always happy to help.
If you’re planning on having a new boiler installed, it is essential that your engineer performs a power Flush BEFORE the installation to ensure any existing sludge and debris doesn’t contaminate the new boiler.
If your heating and hot water system seems a little under-par, here are some of the clues that a Powerflush is needed:
- Discoloured water when bleeding radiators
- Uneven heat distribution in radiators
- Radiators cold at the bottom or top
- Unusually excessive boiler noises
- Cloudy tap water
- Hot pipes but cold radiators
- Small radiator leaks
- Constant boiler shutdown needing restart
- Central heating slow to warm up
Our engineer will connect a pump to your central heating. Special chemical will be pumped through your system’s boiler, pipes and radiators. The three types of chemicals perform different roles;
- Remove sludge and rust
- Breakdown limescale
- Inhibit future corrosion
Depending on the number of radiators, the age of your system and the extent of the existing sludge problem, the process can take anywhere from 6-10 hours. We complete most Powerflush jobs in one day but occasionally unforeseen problems can make the process take longer.
At WaterGuys, we pride ourselves on always giving an honest appraisal of heating issues and advice on the best solutions. Very occasionally, in very severe cases, it can actually be more cost-effective to replace a heating system than perform a Powerflush. We will always advise you if this is the case.
Yes, we always make our clients aware that poorly made or damaged joints could present the risk of leaks and damage to your property. We do our utmost to ensure that we are equipped to deal with this rare, but possible consequence of Powerflushing.
