why do I have to keep resetting my boiler

Constantly having to press the reset button on your boiler is often a sign that there is a fault in your heating system. Don’t be tempted to ignore constant boiler resets. The underlying fault will invariably lead to problems, maybe even boiler breakdown in the future.

Why Does my Boiler Reset Button Keep Flashing?

When your boiler senses a problem, the reset light (which could be red or green) will start flashing. Depending on the make and model of the boiler, a fault code may also be displayed.

Common Reasons for Boiler to Lockout and Require a Reset:

• Ignition problems
• Overheating
• A fault in the boiler pump
• Electrical component failure
• Plate heat exchanger blocked
• A leak somewhere in the heating system
• Insufficient air intake from the flue
Pressure drop
• Worn boiler component part

Pressing the reset button is usually the first thing to try if your boiler has shut down/locked out. Pressing reset may get the boiler going again but always be aware that it most probably hasn’t cured the underlying problem and it will be prudent to call a Gas Safe Registered engineer to diagnose and repair the boiler.

Is it Safe to Reset my Boiler?

Don’t worry! Modern gas boilers have lots of built-in safety features. Any problems that could pose a risk to safety will prevent you from resetting the boiler. If your boiler doesn’t start up after pressing restart once or twice, you shouldn’t keep trying. Contact an experienced boiler engineer to help diagnose and fix the problem.

How do I reset my boiler?

Always refer to the user instruction manual before you reset your boiler. Different brands may have different reset procedures. Only press the reset button once. Continually trying to reset without success could damage the control panel, leaving you with an expensive repair bill.

1.Find the reset button on your boiler – This will most usually be a button with a flashing light, a flame or a cross written through it. This button should clearly be labelled “RESET.” If you’re at all unsure, please double check your user manual.

2.Press the reset button. If the boiler has successfully reset, it will usually display a flashing green light. If however, a fault code is still displayed or the boiler doesn’t kick in after a short while, it’s time to ask for some assistance from an experienced boiler engineer.

Boiler Fault Codes

Maybe you can’t find your boiler manual? Most boiler manufacturers’ user manuals can be found online.  Below are links to common fault codes from some of the most popular manufacturers:
Worcester Bosch online boiler user manuals
Viessmann Online Boiler Fault Code Checker
Ideal Boilers Common Fault Codes
Vaillant Boiler Fault Codes
Glow Worm Boiler fault codes

Take time to identify your fault code and read the boiler handbook instructions carefully. The troubleshooting section of the manual can be very helpful. Sometimes you will be able to resolve a fault code yourself. Perhaps a power cut caused the problem, or maybe a boiler  pressure drop? Other less straightforward problems will need professional attention. Your manual should help you decide whether you need an engineer or whether you can attempt to solve the issue yourself.
Once reset, give the boiler a few minutes to recover itself. You may hear a few strange noises as it goes through its startup procedures. This is quite normal and not cause for concern.

What Should I do if I’ve reset my boiler and it still doesn’t work?

If you’ve tried resetting your boiler and you’re confident there are no supply problems  with electricity and gas (check your gas cooker is working to confirm this), you will need to  call for help from an engineer.
