Understanding the Common Causes of Boiler Failure

A sudden loss of hot water can disrupt your daily routine. Before calling a professional, try these simple troubleshooting tips to diagnose and fix the issue yourself.
Safety First: Always prioritise safety when working with gas appliances. If you’re unsure about any of the steps outlined below, or if the issue persists, consult a qualified gas engineer.

Basic Boiler Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check the Thermostat
Ensure it’s set to the correct temperature: The thermostat should be set to a temperature higher than your current hot water temperature.
Check for power supply: Ensure the thermostat is receiving power and the batteries are working.
2. Inspect the Pilot Light
Reignite the pilot light: If the pilot light has gone out, you’ll need to relight it. Consult your boiler’s manual for specific instructions.
Check for gas supply: Ensure the gas supply to the boiler is turned on.
3. Examine the Pressure Gauge
Check the pressure gauge: Adjust the pressure if it’s too high or low. The gauge should indicate a reading between 1 and 2 bar.
Adjust the pressure: If the pressure is too low, you may need to top up the system. If it’s too high, bleed the radiators.
4. Check the Temperature Sensor
A faulty temperature sensor can lead to inconsistent hot water. While this is a more technical issue, you can try resetting the sensor by turning the boiler off and on again. If the problem persists, it’s best to call a qualified plumber.
5. Inspect the Pump
Listen for unusual noises: A faulty pump can cause strange noises.
Check for blockages: Debris can clog the pump, hindering its performance. Checking for blockages in a boiler pump can be a complex task, often requiring specialised tools and expertise. It’s best left to a qualified professional.
Remember: If you’re unsure about any of these steps or the issue persists, it’s advisable to contact a professional plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

Hot water stopped running. Thought it was the pump but after calling them, they thought it could be a different problem. Michael came very promptly to do a diagnosis which turned out to be a faulty valve on the cold water supply to the hot water tank. Replaced the valve and after bleeding the system all worked again. Saved getting a new pump costing a lot more. Excellent people and company. Much less expensive than the big boys. Highly recommended.

Common Boiler Problems and Solutions

In addition to the common issues mentioned above, here are some other common boiler problems and their solutions:
Boiler Not Igniting: This could be due to a faulty ignition system, a lack of gas supply, or a blocked flue.
Low Water Pressure: Low water pressure can affect the boiler’s performance. Check for leaks, blockages, or a faulty pump.
Radiator Problems: Bleed radiators to remove trapped air, and ensure they’re not blocked.
Noise and Vibrations: Excessive noise or vibration can indicate a faulty pump or other internal component.

Preventing Boiler Breakdowns

Regular Servicing: Annual servicing by a qualified engineer can help prevent breakdowns and improve efficiency.
Water Treatment: Consider using a water softener to reduce limescale buildup, which can damage your boiler.
Regular Checks: Keep an eye on your boiler’s pressure gauge and temperature settings.
By following these tips and seeking professional help when needed, you can ensure your boiler continues to provide reliable hot water and heating.
Why is my boiler making a strange noise?

Strange noises can indicate various issues, such as a faulty pump, air in the system, or a worn-out component. It’s best to consult a professional for accurate diagnosis and repair.

Annual boiler servicing is recommended to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and safety.

Power flushing is a process that removes sludge and debris from your central heating system, improving its efficiency and lifespan.

With proper maintenance, a boiler can last 10-15 years.

Regular servicing, bleeding radiators, and ensuring proper thermostat settings can help improve your boiler’s energy efficiency.

Turn off the water supply to the boiler and contact a qualified plumber immediately.
