Do You Think You May Have a Gas Leak?

If you can smell gas, you may have a leak which is a potential emergency. Knowing what to do and who to contact could save lives…

Essential Dos and Don’ts

  • – Open doors and windows to let fresh air in
  • – Extinguish any naked flames such as candles or cigarettes
  • – While inside the property, DO NOT use mobile phones, doorbells or turn any electrical switches on or off – doing so could ignite escaping gas
  • – If you can do it safely, turn off the gas emergency control valve (also called the gas emergency shut-off valve) The valve is normally located near the meter. Do not attempt to do this if your shut-off valve is located in a cellar or basement
  • – Leave the property. Using a mobile phone,  call the National Gas Emergencies number  0800 111 999. The number is open 24 hours a day and is free to call.
  • – Carefully listen to and follow the advice given by the emergency advisor

Common Causes of Gas Leaks

Badly fitted or poorly serviced gas appliances carry the risk of gas leaks, explosions and fires or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

What Does a Gas Leak Smell Like?

Natural gas is odourless, which is why mercaptan (a non-toxic artificial smell) is added to it. This gives a unique smell to escaping gas, allowing easier detection. Mercaptan smells a little like rotten eggs with its strong, sulphur-like odour. Becoming aware of this smell is usually the first sign that a gas leak may be present and it is essential to act quickly to protect yourself and those around you.

It is important to also be aware that carbon monoxide can also leak from gas appliances. Carbon monoxide is odourless and can only be detected by a carbon monoxide detector, which will sound an alarm when CO is present.

What Physical Symptoms Can be Caused by a Gas Leak?

A distinctive sulphur-like smell is usually the first sign of a gas leak, but the following physical symptoms may be experienced:

  • – A feeling of lightheadedness
  • – Nausea
  • – Dizziness
  • – Headaches

Never ignore these symptoms if you suspect a gas leak. Go outside immediately and call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999

Who Can Fix a Gas Leak?

Once a property has been declared safe, gas leaks should always be confirmed by a competent Gas Safe registered engineer, who should also complete any gas work needed.

What is a Gas Safe Registered engineer?

Only Gas Safe registered engineers are legally allowed to work on boilers, cookers, fires or any other type of gas appliance.

WaterGuys are fully competent, Gas Safe registered engineers.

Gas Leak Prevention

Worryingly, it has been shown by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that one in three UK households are skipping annual gas safety checks due to the cost of living crisis.

Poorly installed gas appliances pose a significant risk of fire or explosions and should be checked regularly for your own safety. Always get gas appliances fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Also consider fitting a gas detector alarm to immediately alert you to any leaks.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning can prove fatal. CO leaks can easily go unnoticed as they are colourless and odourless. Installing a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector will greatly reduce the risk of this happening.

Landlord Gas Safety – Legal Obligations

If you live in rented accommodation, your landlord has a legal responsibility to have annual Gas Safety checks carried out and should provide you with a Gas Safety Certificate.

What if the gas leak is coming from outside?

Report any outside gas leaks to the National Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999.

Outside leaks should be repaired free of charge.

Conclusion

If you suspect you have a gas leak, always err on the side of caution and secure the safety of your property by following the steps outlined in the beginning of our article.
